AI in Modern Warfare & Business Ethics — Venture Cafe Session

Last week Mariya Ortynska with MIT Fulbright Scholar Nadiia Vasylieva have led the engaging discussion with entrepreneurs, investors and startups on the intersection of AI, defense technology, and business ethics “AI in Modern Warfare & Business Ethics” at Venture Cafe Cambridge.

Mariya highlights the key insights:

  • Copyright and AI in Warfare – At first glance, AI in defense technology might seem unrelated to copyright issues. Unlike AI applications in music, video, and publishing, where copyright concerns are widely debated, warfare AI doesn’t immediately raise red flags.
  • Hidden Copyright Issues – In reality, AI models used in warfare are often trained on copyrighted materials, such as specific datasets, images. Just like in creative industries, using such data requires permission from copyright owners.
  • Data & Liability Considerations – When large volumes of images, videos, and other data are used for training AI in defense applications, disclaimers become crucial. If your data is accessible for AI training, consider limiting liability and clarifying non-association with potential outcomes. NASA is a great example of doing this.

As AI is rapidly transforming defense and security, it raises such important ethical and legal questions. Mariya Ortynska is constantly deepening her knowledge in the aspect of emerging technologies to keep the finger on the pulse.
